Liner Notes from international Jazzjournalist Mike Hennessey:
The piano trio has been a major creative force on the jazz scene since
the 1940s, when the piano-bass-drums line-up was pioneered by such
eminent keyboard exponents as Jess Stacy, Teddy Wilson, Mary Lou Williams,
Erroll Garner, Bud Powell and Thelonious Monk.
Christoph Mueller's compositions provide ample space for bass and drum
contributions. As well as being an accomplished pianist, Mueller is a prolific
composer of diverse themes. The MKD Trio library includes some numbers
with a very precise form and others where they start with the theme and then
go a little bit "out", so that each performance is different from the last. Frank
Denzinger is a highly versatile drummer who is in demand as a session man
and has also worked with Benny Golson and has played with the Südwest-
deutschen Philharmonie. Arpi Ketterl is an extremely gifted bassist with a
good ear, excellent intonation and time and he has had wide-ranging experience,
having played with Benny Golson, Arthur Blythe, Urszula Dudziak,
Oskar Klein, Queen Bey and Peter Herbolzheimer, among many other prominent
jazz artists.
The MKD Trio came together about two years ago and soon discovered that
they shared the same approach to jazz. All three members have a special
regard for the Bill Evans, Keith Jarrett and Esbjorn Svensson trios, and, like
EST, the MKD combo draws its inspiration from a variety of sources outside
the jazz tradition - but without losing its own special identity.
